kyLGBT.org | Kentucky's LGBT Community | Youth & University Outreach Director

Benjamin Kale Poynter Brannock
Youth and University Outreach Director

The Youth and University Outreach Director works with teens and college students across the Commonwealth to help fight issues in school systems because of sexual orientation/gender identity, and to give them support in coming out and dealing with discrimination.

Kentucky Equality Federation's Youth and University Outreach Director also develops and maintains close relationships with high school and college gay-straight alliances (GSA’s) across the Commonwealth in order to identify potential problems they are having and extend the Federation’s support.
Our Outreach Directors are our front-line activists, working within their targeted communities to change minds and hearts, one conversation at a time.  These volunteers work with their families, co-workers and neighbors, elected officials and local media – they build coalitions with other organizations in their targeted community – they are a driving force behind our Federation.

Outreach Directors service are non-officer, non-director volunteers who reach out to targeted communities in many different ways:

  1. Kentucky Equality Federation's Outreach Directors focus on educating the public about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) issues within specific communities – providing information and sharing our message in specific ways (including elected officials, appointed officials, other organizations, etc.), as well as contributing information regarding each community to our statewide organization. Outreach Directors will report problems and/or issues their targeted community is facing to the Office of the President, as well as the Discrimination, Hate Crimes, and School Bullying Committee.
  2. Outreach Directors increase the networking ability of the organization by doing outreach work on a statewide level such as building coalitions with organizations across the Commonwealth.
  3. Outreach Directors also reach out to members of the LGBTI community that too often have not been included, either in positions of leadership or in public education.

Bullying, violence, and discrimination are all things we face in Kentucky public and private schools. From the University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University, Northern Kentucky University, Murray State University, etc. this group is for all current students and alumni at Kentucky Universities who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning their sexual orientation, or our straight allies.

ABOUT OUR YOUTH AND UNIVERSITY OUTREACH DIRECTOR:

At Kentucky Equality Federation (who is also the sponsor of Marriage Equality Kentucky), Outreach Directors focus on educating the public about LGBTIQ issues (including marriage equality) within targeted communities – providing information and sharing our message in specific ways, as well as contributing information regarding their communities to our statewide organization. The Outreach Directors carry the responsibility for reaching members of the larger LBGTIQ community that too often have not been included, either in positions of leadership or in public education.

Every day, LGBTI people are denied many of the freedoms enjoyed by other Americans. We are committed to secure full equality for the LGBTI community of the Commonwealth. Your support is critical to our success. Please fund our efforts to end discrimination in Kentucky.

The origins of the Federation can be traced back to November 01, 2005 when Jordan Palmer created a political group of MySpace.com to discuss gay politics in Kentucky.  The group reached over 500 members within 3 months and was named “Kentucky Equal Rights.”

On March 22, 2006, Jordan Palmer and Nick Herweck organized a protest at the Governor’s Mansion to protest funding to a religious Baptist school in Southern Kentucky that had expelled a gay student. The protest, held when 20,000 people visited the Capitol for the Governor’s Annual Derby Breakfast made headlines across Kentucky, and the nation.  Soon thereafter, Kentucky Equality was incorporated as Federation for Kentucky Equality, Inc.

Today, Federation for Kentucky Equality is a statewide organization that reaches nearly 11,000 individuals and 6 groups across the Commonwealth of Kentucky and is a member of the International Lesbian & Gay Association.
