Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell have long served as symbols of Equality. The abolitionists, who sought to end slavery, used the Liberty Bell as their logo.
Fifty years after the Civil War, the suffragists, who sought women’s voting rights, used the bell as their civil rights emblem. Recognizing the significance of the site, the Gay Pioneers staged their “Annual Reminders” in front of Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.
Located in Philadelphia, the first capitol of the United States, Independence Hall is the birthplace of American democracy.

In this landmark building, the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. In it, the Liberty Bell first tolled.
The Gay Pioneers selected this site to launch the organized gay and lesbian civil rights movement with demonstrations each Fourth of July from 1965 to 1969. Named the "Annual Reminders," these demonstrations laid the groundwork for the Stonewall Uprising in 1969 and the first New York Pride Parade in 1970. We will follow in their footsteps.
