Stop the Immoral Adoption Ban in the Senate!

We need your urgent help to kill a bill in the Kentucky Senate that would ban gay (LGBTI) adoption; Senate Bill 68.

Senate Bill 68 isn't about protecting children, it is about harming a specific group of people, the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and intersex community of the Commonwealth.

Kentucky Senator Gary Tapp (R) filed the proposed legislation.

Various professional organizations have carefully studied the scientific research and issued policy statements supporting adoption by gay and lesbian people. These organizations include: American Academy of Pediatrics, American Psychological Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Psychoanalytic Association, National Council of Adoptable Children, Child Welfare League of America, National Association of Social Workers, and others.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there is no credible scientific evidence that the sexual orientation of parents has any effect either on the quality of parenting or on the wellbeing of their children.

As a citizen of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, I believe that Kentucky's foster care system is in crisis. Thousands of adoptable children are currently languishing in foster care, many bouncing from home to home or from institution to institution. Senate Bill 68 isn't about protecting children, it is about harming a specific group of people! I recognize the expert opinions of professional organizations that have carefully studied the scientific research and issued policy statements supporting adoption by gay and lesbian people. I believe these children deserve the legal protection afforded by second-parent adoption. I believe a categorical ban prohibiting all gay and lesbian people from adopting, regardless of the applicants' qualifications and the best interests of the child involved, is harmful to children. I believe adoption should be granted only to qualified applicants based on an individualized assessment of what is in the best interests of the child(ren) to be adopted. Equality. Fairness.
